The day everything changed
Kerrin Bowerson is a 32-year-old single mother raising four children: her 12-year-old son Vincent, her 10-year-old daughter Harley, and her 3-year-old identical twin girls, Raven and Reign. Every day, Kerrin worked to give her children a stable, loving life.
Before Reign's diagnosis, Kerrin was working full-time as a cook at The Vines Hospital in Ocala, Florida, while working toward becoming a Mental Health Technician. Raven and Reign attended a Christian daycare they loved, surrounded by teachers who had cared for them since they were babies, while Vincent and Harley attended public school.
Their lives changed suddenly and forever on March 24, 2026.
While Kerrin was at work, she missed several urgent calls from the twins' daycare. When she finally saw the messages, she learned that Reign's diaper was filled with blood. Kerrin immediately left work, picked Reign up, and rushed her to the emergency room. After hours of waiting and testing, doctors discovered a large tumor on Reign's right kidney.
Later that night, Kerrin drove Reign herself to UF Health Shands, a hospital an hour and a half away, so Reign could receive the care she needed. The next day, after further scans, doctors confirmed the devastating news: Reign had cancer.
She was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, a rare kidney cancer, and her condition was advanced. The cancer had spread from her kidney to both of her lungs.
Hearing the words "your child has cancer" is something no parent is ever prepared for. In that moment, Kerrin's world shattered as she tried to process everything while staying strong for Reign.
Reign had always been a fighter. Even before she was born, doctors found a mass on her lung. She was born prematurely at 35 weeks and spent time in the NICU. At just 8 months old, she had surgery to remove part of her lung, and later endured another surgery for a serious infection. In her short three years of life, she faced more than most.
And now, she is resting after facing the biggest battle of all.
During treatment, Reign underwent weekly chemotherapy treatments that required long trips to UF Health Shands. Because of Reign's condition, she could no longer attend daycare, and Kerrin had to stop working to care for her full-time.
Kerrin did everything she could to stay strong, not just for Reign, but for all four of her children.
